“We need to ask Logan some questions,” said Alice as she, Franny, and Owen made their way down Main Street toward the park. “Get a feel for what was going on between him and Rich.”

“When we find him, give me a few minutes alone with him. I have an idea of how to approach him,” said Owen.

“Speak of the devil,” Franny whispered, grabbing Owen’s arm. “There’s Logan now.”

Sure enough, Logan was standing near the gazebo in the park, talking to a group of faire-goers. He’d changed out his Prince John costume for more generic medieval garb and looked like a typical nobleman.

Logan spotted Owen, Alice, and Franny and waved them over. “Hello, all! How’s everyone this fine day?”

“We’re so glad the faire is going on,” said Alice, placing a comforting hand on Logan’s shoulder. “We were surprised when it didn’t get called off.”

“How are you?” asked Franny, her voice full of concern.

Logan’s smile faded, and he nodded. “Thank you for asking. I’m going to be okay.”

“Let us buy you some coffee,” said Owen.

“I’d love that. Thanks,” said Logan.

They all made their way through the park to the tavern that had been erected in a corner among the trees. Owen ordered coffee for everyone, and they sat down at a table in the shade.

“Of course, you’d be surprised we’re going ahead with the faire,” Logan said, looking at Alice. “After what happened to Rich . . .” He stopped talking and stared into his coffee cup for a moment. Then, he leaned in a little closer and lowered his voice. “I consider you all to be friends, so I’ll just come out with it. The faire is in trouble. Has been for a while. The past few years have been rough, but we’re really teetering on the brink now. This round in Blue Valley is our last hope. That’s why Rich called in a favor and got Evan East to come. It’s our last-ditch effort.”

“Has East agreed to stay on through the weekend?” asked Alice.

“Yes, in honor of Rich. They’re old friends, you know. I don’t know many celebrities, but East seems like a pretty decent guy. Anyway, a lot of people count on this faire for their livelihoods. I hate what happened to Rich, and I’m sure the police will figure it all out, but in the meantime, I’m trying to do the right thing.”

“I’m glad,” said Franny. “Oh! Alice!” She stood suddenly and looked at the space on her wrist where her watch would normally be. “We have that errand to run, remember?”

“Oh, that’s right,” said Alice, standing. “We do have . . . an important errand.”

“We’ll just finish our coffee,” said Owen. “I’ll come find you in a few.”

“Please, let me know if you need anything, Logan,” said Alice as she turned to go. Then, she stopped and came back to the table and gave Logan’s arm a squeeze. “We’re all very sorry for your loss.”

Logan nodded and swallowed hard. “Thank you.”

Alice and Franny hurried off through the growing crowd in the park.
